Egbert: 802-839
The son of Ealhmund, King of Kent, King Egbert is regarded as the first king of all England - although it's far from certain that he ever thought of himself in this way.

He was Declared "Bretwalda" ("ruler of Britain") in 829 after defeating the Northumbrians, driving the West Welsh from Cornwall and submitting the Mercians to his rule.
