Leave the M6 at Lockerbie and follow the B723 to Eskdalemuir. Turn right at the junction, then follow the road round across the bridge, heading south on the B709. After about a mile, you will see a parking area on the left with an information board.

Loupin Stanes is a small stone circle, approximately 10 meters in diameter. It consists of 12 stones, situated on an artificial platform above the banks of the River Esk. Ten of the stones are quite small, rising to no more than about two feet. The two remaining stones are larger, rising to around 5 feet.

Loupin Stanes is initially underwhelming, but the circle does posses a certain charm, and the surrounding views of the Esk Valley greatly enhance the atmosphere.

A second stone circle - Girdle Stanes - is situated along the bank of the river, a few minutes away from Loupin Stanes. The proximity of this second (more impressive) site makes this beautiful location well worth a visit.
