As with Scorhill, OS Landranger Map 191 is strongly recommended. Take the A3124 South from the A30. Turn right onto the B3206 towards Chagford. In the centre of Chagford, turn right. When the road next forks, take the right hand fork. Head straight over at the crossroads, and follow the road until you end up at the gate to Batworthy farm. Park in the rough lay-by, then follow the footpath along the edge of the tree line until you see the stone rows on the slope of the hill ahead and to your left.

Shovel Down is a complex containing a number of stone rows, a small stone circle, a few burial cairns, the remains of an ancient settlement and an impressive standing stone known as the Longstone.

Shovel Down is another of Dartmoor's gloriously isolated sites. Although relatively easy to find, it's still right out in the sticks, far from the bustle of civilisation. If you want peace and solitude, this is the place to be. I've spent hours here wandering amongst the stones without seeing another soul. It's a place where you can step back in time and indulge the imagination.
